What To Do If a Loved One Is Detained by ICE in Houston

The phone call almost always comes at the worst time.
Sometimes late at night. Sometimes in the middle of the workday. The voice on the other end is shaking.

“They took him.”
“She didn’t come home.”
“ICE has my husband.”

I hear versions of this moment every week. Immigration detention is not just a legal issue. It is a family emergency that disrupts safety, routines, finances, and peace of mind all at once.

If someone you love has been detained by ICE in Houston, here is what you need to know and what you should do next.

The First Hours Are Often the Most Confusing

Families usually try to locate their loved one immediately. In many cases, ICE has not yet fully processed the person into the system, which means their name may not appear right away in the ICE detainee locator.

This delay is frightening, but it is common. Silence during this stage does not mean hope is lost. When families contact my office, one of the first things I do is help locate where their loved one is being held and confirm their status.

Do Not Sign Anything Without Legal Guidance

Inside detention, individuals are often pressured to sign documents quickly. They may be told that signing will make things easier or speed things up.

This is dangerous.

Some documents, including voluntary departure paperwork, can permanently damage or end an immigration case. I advise families clearly: do not sign anything until you understand what it means.

Can My Loved One Get Bond?

Bond is often the difference between fighting a case from home or from inside detention.

Bond eligibility depends on several factors:

  • Criminal history
  • Reason for detention
  • Length of time in the U.S.
  • Family and community ties

If bond is available, I prepare a bond request and supporting evidence immediately. Strong preparation can significantly increase the chances of release.

Immigration Cases Begin Immediately

Waiting hurts cases. Evidence should be gathered early, including letters of support, proof of family ties, employment history, and immigration documents.

Even while detained, your loved one still has rights, including the right to remain silent and the right to an attorney. Detention is intimidating by design, but it does not erase dignity or due process.
